After my challenging experience at CenturyLink, I wasn’t sure I’d ever feel good about work again. I craved a change — something far from the corporate chaos I’d just escaped. Enter Arc Thrift Stores, specifically their Greeley, CO location.
Getting here wasn’t entirely my idea. Jack, my high school friend of 23 years, deserves the credit. He described the job as “laid-back and relaxed,” and given how hectic my last role was, those words sounded like a dream. Jack even went the extra mile by putting in a good word for me with the team, providing a reference that I know helped seal the deal.
What makes it fun? First, the customers and the treasures they bring. You meet all kinds of people, from treasure hunters to thrifty parents to college students looking for funky finds. Every day brings a new interaction or an unexpected discovery.
One day last week, someone brought in a collection of baseball card volumes—some complete sets, others partial ones. They were priced at $15.99 each and sold out within three days! I haven’t purchased anything yet (still waiting for my first full paycheck on Thursday), but seeing treasures like that come and go makes me excited for the day I can snag something unique for myself.
And then, of course, there are the adorable babies and puppies that visit the store. Whether it’s a sweet smile from a giggling baby or the wag of a tail from a curious pup, these little moments absolutely melt my heart. They remind me that sometimes, it’s the small joys that make the workday so much brighter.
Second, the mission. Working at Arc Thrift Stores means contributing to a greater cause. The store supports individuals with deve lopmental disabilities, and knowing that my work helps make a difference gives me purpose. After feeling like just another cog in the machine at my last job, that’s incredibly rewarding.
Third, the support for employees like me. As someone with a prosthetic leg, standing for long periods can be tough. Arc Thrift Stores makes accommodations that genuinely help — like letting me use a stool whenever I need to rest. That level of understanding and flexibility makes a huge difference in my day-to-day life. It’s not just about getting the job done; it’s about ensuring I can do it comfortably and effectively.
Finally, and most importantly — it’s the people I work with. Jack wasn’t kidding when he said this place was laid-back. Everyone is friendly, supportive, and quick to lend a hand when needed. Management isn’t breathing down our necks — they trust us to get the job done and create a welcoming environment for customers.
Don’t get me wrong: retail isn’t always easy. There are still challenging days. But here at Arc Thrift Stores, those challenges feel manageable. When you’re part of a team that values you and supports you, even the toughest days don’t seem so bad.
To anyone looking for a job that’s rewarding, dynamic, and (yes!) fun, I’d say this: find your own “right place.” For me, that’s Arc Thrift Stores, thanks to a nudge from Jack. After everything I went through at my last job, it’s incredible to feel this happy and fulfilled every single day — from the moment I clock in to the moment I clock out!
